According to Hindu epic Ramayana,Lord Ram, the seventh avatar of the god Vishnu, prayed to Shiva here to absolve any sins that he might have committed during his war against the demon-king Ravana in SriLanka.
There are two lingams inside the sanctum – According to tradition, one built by Rama from sand, residing as the main deity, called the Ramalingam, and the one brought by Lord Hanuman from Kailash, called the Vishvalingam.
